Carol Morris, MD, MS, has assumed the position of Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). A skilled surgeon and talented leader, Dr. Morris has a deep familiarity with MSK, having previously spent 14 years at the institution as a fellow and faculty member. She joins MSK from Johns Hopkins Hospital and succeeds John Healey, MD, FACS, who led the service for over 30 years. Dr. Healey will remain a full-time active member of the Orthopaedic Service.
“Dr. Morris is an internationally recognized leader in orthopedic oncology and a superb technical surgeon,” said Jeffrey Drebin, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Surgery at MSK. “During her previous time on our faculty, she acquired a reputation as an outstanding physician. We are delighted to welcome her back to MSK and look forward to the future of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service under her leadership.”
Dr. Morris has clinical expertise in primary bone cancer, metastatic cancer to bone, soft tissue sarcoma, and neurofibromatosis. She practices with a focus on not only treating the cancer, but also on maintaining quality of life for patients through a personalized approach. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers, edited several books, written numerous chapters and review articles, and lectured around the world. She has held leadership roles in numerous organizations, most notably the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, where she is the immediate Past President.
Reflecting on her new role, Dr. Morris stated, “MSK’s orthopedic surgeons have the unique expertise to treat not only the cancer itself, but the effects of cancer treatment on the musculoskeletal system that our patients can experience. I look forward to working with my colleagues across the institution to provide a truly personalized, multi-disciplinary, approach to each patient. I am thrilled to be returning to MSK and honored to be leading this group of best-in-class surgeons.”
Dr. Morris received BS and MS degrees from MIT and received her MD from Boston University. She trained in Orthopaedic Surgery at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Morris then completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology at MSK from 1999-2001 and remained as a faculty member of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service for 13 years. In 2014, she moved to the Johns Hopkins Medicine to lead their Orthopaedic Oncology program, substantially increasing the faculty complement in Orthopaedic Oncology and the program’s clinical and academic productivity.
