Dr. Smita C. Banerjee is an Associate Member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), as well as an Associate Attending Behavioral Scientist on the Behavioral Sciences Service in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. 

Prior to joining MSK’s faculty, Dr. Banerjee received a Bachelor of Science in Home Science from Delhi University in India (1996), a Master of Science in Communication Media for Children from Srimati Nathibai Damodar Thakersey (SNDT) University in India (1998), and a PhD in Health Communication from Rutgers University (2005). 

Dr. Banerjee’s research focuses on the science of effective healthcare delivery and gaining a better understanding of communication between patients and healthcare providers using both observational and interventional methods. As a member of the research faculty of the Communication Skills (Comskil) Training and Research Laboratory, she serves as an educator and collaborative investigator supporting the Comskil Training Program, an intensive didactic and experiential training effort for MSK residents, fellows, nurses, and attendings focusing on common challenges faced in communication with patients with cancer and their families.

She is currently co-leading a national multi-site trial to promote the destigmatization of interactions with oncology care providers treating patients diagnosed with lung cancer. She has authored more than 100 articles in journals including Patient Education and Counseling, Translational Behavioral Medicine, and Journal of Health Communication. Dr. Banerjee has received research grant funding from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the American Cancer Society.
