Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that works by allowing a patient's immune system to target their cancer. As a physician scientist, my work is focused on developing new immunotherapies and bringing them, along with other types of cancer treatment, to my patients.

Hi, I’m Dr. Danny Khalil, a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I care for people with pancreatic, liver, biliary, and other gastrointestinal cancers.

As an oncologist, it’s important to understand both the patient’s unique background and their tumor’s distinct biology -- including at the genetic and the molecular level. This information can help us to select personalized treatments such as immunotherapy or other forms of precision medicine.

MSK is privileged to have many of the most skilled specialists in the world; and to have access to the latest equipment for treating cancer. Working with colleagues across specialties, my role is to bring together these resources for each of my patients within a unified treatment strategy.

A highlight of my job is the opportunity to offer patients innovative new medicines -- often ones developed here at MSK -- that have proven to be more effective than earlier treatments.

There is nothing quite like being able to tell a patient that one of these medicines has been effective in treating their cancer.
