I am dedicated to providing state-of-the-art compassionate care for my patients. Although being told you have cancer is unsettling, I will take all the time needed to explain the available treatment options to you and your family.

Hi, I’m Dr. James Isbell. I’m a thoracic surgeon here at Memorial Sloan Kettering, specializing in the surgical treatment of lung cancer and other cancers of the chest, including cancers that have spread to the lung from other organs of the body.

I use minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgical techniques that allow me to operate with exceptional precision to preserve vital lung tissue, enabling patients to breathe better and recover more rapidly.

My research focuses on so-called “liquid biopsy” technologies that use blood to detect cancer much earlier than can be detected by current standard of care techniques, such as CAT scans. I also lead clinical trials to investigate how these tests can guide lung cancer treatment and improve patient outcomes, including in more advanced disease.

My fight against cancer is a personal one, shaped by my own experience navigating the cancer diagnoses of my parents and my younger brother. I know how overwhelming this journey can feel, and I’m committed to traveling this road alongside you.

Together, we'll explore every possibility and create a path forward. I’ll always be here for you, and it would be my honor to be trusted with your care.
