During my final year of general surgery training in California, I was advised by my mentors to go to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for a fellowship in Surgical Oncology. Since starting my fellowship here in 1990, I have never looked back. My professional life for over 3 decades has been here at MSK, helping patients with cancers of the colon, rectum, small intestine, and appendix.

Hello. I'm Dr. Philip Paty, the longest-serving member of the colorectal surgery team at MSK. My surgical practice is dedicated to the care of patients with colorectal cancer, and it covers the full gamut of intestinal surgery, from very precise robotic operations for tumors within the colon to complex procedures for tumors that have spread beyond the colon. Having cared for thousands of cancer patients, I have seen the tremendous impact that state of the art cancer care can have on patients and their families. I am especially proud of my leadership in exploring non-surgical options, which I began nearly twenty years ago. The results I published showed the safety of not operating on colon and rectal tumors when other treatments can be equally effective. I have helped hundreds of patients to avoid rectal surgery and to preserve normal bowel function. These lessons have been adopted world-wide and become our standard here at MSK.

As a third-generation doctor and a family man, my sense of purpose for cancer care is deeply rooted. I’ll take the time to get to know you as a person, and together we will build that important bond of trust.
