Dr. William Christopher Newman treats spinal and metastatic tumors at MSK using minimally invasive surgery and advanced pain management to preserve patients’ quality of life.
Cancer of the spine can be life-altering not just for the person diagnosed, but for their entire family. That’s why treating spinal tumors requires more than surgical expertise. It takes deep compassion, empathy, and a commitment to easing the burdens this disease can bring.
I'm Dr. Christopher Newman, a neurosurgeon and spine oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I specialize in treating tumors of the spine, that either arise from the spine itself or that spread from other locations. I also treat tumors affecting the spinal cord and the surrounding nerves.
I chose neurosurgery because it remains a frontier in medicine, with the potential to drive meaningful innovation and advance patient care.
To do this, we use advanced minimally invasive techniques, image guidance, and even robotics. I remove tumors and treat spine pain to preserve mobility and function.
A significant part of my practice focuses on pain management – through spinal cord implants and direct medication delivery to the spine.
My clinical research examines the impact of time and financial constraints often placed on families during treatment. Along with the goal of extending survival, I also want to minimize the burden of treatment on families – so you don’t just survive, you thrive.
At MSK, expert, compassionate care defines everything we do – treating both the disease and the person dealing with it. My patients are the best part of my work, and it’s an honor for me to ensure your care is not only personalized, but empowering.
