Get to Know Me

I am a cardiologist specializing in echocardiography, a non-invasive test that allows us to see the heart beating, as well as the valves and other structures of the heart. At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), I work closely with oncologists, surgeons, and radiation oncologists to provide specialized care to patients with cancer.

My interest in cancer care began early in medical school when I had an internship in pediatric oncology at MSK, followed by a year of laboratory research as a Howard Hughes Research Scholar at the National Cancer Institute. Ultimately, I chose to specialize in cardiology and noninvasive imaging (echocardiography). When I returned to MSK as a cardiologist in 2007, I was glad to be able to merge both of these interests.

In addition to practicing as a cardiologist, I am the cardiology consultant for cardiotoxicity in many clinical cancer trials at MSK. I also teach nationally and internationally about the unique aspects of cardiac disease in patients with cancer and serve as a Vice Chair of Quality Assurance in the Department of Medicine at MSK. In this role, I work to improve patient safety.

What I Do at MSK

Disclosures

Members of the MSK Community often work with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology, and life sciences companies, and other organizations outside of MSK, to find safe and effective cancer treatments, to improve patient care, and to educate the health care community. These activities outside of MSK further our mission, provide productive collaborations, and promote the practical application of scientific discoveries.

MSK requires doctors, faculty members, and leaders to report (“disclose”) the relationships and financial interests they have with external entities. As a commitment to transparency with our community, we make that information available to the public. Not all disclosed interests and relationships present conflicts of interest. MSK reviews all disclosed interests and relationships to assess whether a conflict of interest exists and whether formal COI management is needed.

Carol L. Chen discloses the following relationships and financial interests:
