Get to Know Me

I am a radiation oncologist with a focus on palliative radiation and caring for people with cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. I have always been interested in a team-based, balanced approach to cancer care. I keep my patients and their families at the center of my work.

Cancer treatment has remarkable potential to help people live better and live longer. However, it can also be very challenging for patients and families to manage. Careful consideration of the side effects of treatment is necessary. This fine balance between helping a patient feel better and minimizing side effects motivated me to pursue this career.

I also have a background in medical ethics. My research is focused on ensuring that people have a good understanding of their treatment options (informed consent) and the power to make their treatment decisions (autonomy). Patients should know that they can benefit from new and exciting cancer therapies without being subject to too many side effects. It is important to me that patients have the best quality of life possible. I am interested in harnessing the power of new technologies to achieve this.

When I meet with patients, I want to find out what is important to them. Sometimes it is living as long as possible, sometimes it is living without symptoms, and sometimes it is minimizing time in the hospital. With those goals in mind, we come up with a cancer care plan that makes sense for the individual and their family.
