Get to Know Me

I am a surgeon who cares for people with cancers of the colonrectumanusappendix, and peritoneum. I also serve as the Vice President of Quality and Safety where I am responsible for managing MSK’s clinical quality, patient safety, and infection control.

I am experienced in the treatment of cancers within the peritoneal cavity (the space between the organs in the abdomen), such as pseudomyxoma peritonei and mesothelioma. Additionally, I have specialized training in using the latest surgical approaches for colorectal cancer, including robotic surgery.

When patients first meet with me, they are often anxious about their diagnosis. Many have received information about their prognosis that can sometimes be quite different from our patients’ outcomes. As a result, they have many questions about how cancer and its treatment will affect their quality of life and outlook.

I take the time to listen, address their concerns, and explain their treatment options, including how and why they may differ from those recommended elsewhere. We work together to develop a care plan that considers the specifics of each person’s cancer diagnosis. We also consider each person’s unique needs and preferences so we can offer the best possible result. I want my patients to feel supported and know that they are in the best hands at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

In my role as Vice President of Quality and Safety, I am committed to ensuring the best and safest experience for our patients and staff at MSK. I focus on data analysis to improve processes, teach and train staff, and help nurture a culture of safety and transparency.  As a clinician, my primary research focus is developing clinical trials to understand how cancer spreads to the peritoneal region and testing the effectiveness of peritoneal therapy.

I am the primary investigator for the ICARuS Trial (Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy After cytoReductive Surgery). This is a randomized clinical trial investigating the benefit of intraperitoneal chemotherapy (giving chemotherapy directly into the abdomen after surgery) for people with appendiceal or colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is the first-ever prospective trial with the primary goal of measuring the efficacy of intraperitoneal chemotherapy for appendix cancer worldwide. It is also the first randomized trial of intraperitoneal chemotherapy for colorectal cancer completed in the United States.

I am also the primary investigator of ICARuS II. This randomized clinical trial opened in 2023 and is studying the efficacy of intraperitoneal therapy for people with peritoneal mesothelioma.

In addition, I am working with scientists in medical oncology and at the Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI) to develop new therapies for peritoneal disease. For example, we are using an antibody called SADA (Self-Assembling and Disassembling) to deliver therapeutic agents, such as radioactive isotopes or chemotherapy, directly to the cancer cells. We hope to bring this from the laboratory to a first-in-human clinical trial soon. I am passionate about supporting cancer research at MSK. I have raised over $150,000 by completing numerous races for Fred’s Team®. I have run NYC Half Marathons each year from 2010 through 2014, and 10 NYC Marathons (in 2010, 2011, 2013-15, 2017, 2018, and 2021-2023).

Members of the MSK Community often work with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology, and life sciences companies, and other organizations outside of MSK, to find safe and effective cancer treatments, to improve patient care, and to educate the health care community. These activities outside of MSK further our mission, provide productive collaborations, and promote the practical application of scientific discoveries.

As a commitment to transparency with our community, we make that information available to the public. Not all disclosed interests and relationships present conflicts of interest. MSK reviews all disclosed interests and relationships to assess whether a conflict of interest exists and whether formal COI management is needed.
