Marcelo Xavier Hernandez Cuchillas, MD
Hospitalist
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

About Me
- Assistant Attending Physician
As a hospitalist (a doctor trained in internal medicine who works in a hospital), I care for people admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I treat complications related to cancer and its treatment, as well as other medical conditions that require hospitalization. These include oncologic emergencies, acute illness (a condition that develops suddenly and lasts a short period of time) such as infections, and acute symptoms such as pain and nausea.

I work closely with patients’ primary oncology team to formulate a treatment plan during the patient’s stay. Clear communication with patients is important to me. I understand that hospitalization can be a stressful and unfamiliar time for patients, so I make a point to keep them updated about what is happening. If we need to give additional medications or order testing or consultations with other specialists, I take the time to explain why and answer any questions that my patients may have.
Inpatient (in the hospital) medicine combines the two things that I value the most in my work as a physician: the ability to develop relationships with patients and their loved ones during a very difficult time and the opportunity to see the big picture, handle diseases that touch multiple organ systems, and treat the patient as a whole.
Hospitalists are always looking for ways to improve the quality of the care we provide. There is a growing interest in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) as a tool for more rapid and precise diagnosis. I am currently training on POCUS to gain the core skills necessary to incorporate it into the care of my patients. In the future, I plan to use it as part of my quality improvement and research initiatives.
Outside of the hospital, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two boys, reading, playing guitar, and finding new places to eat in New York City.
A hospitalist is a doctor with special training in caring for people in the hospital.
