Michael V. Gormally, MD, PhD
We post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

Get to Know Me
I am a medical oncologist and physician-scientist with a focus on cellular therapies for solid tumors. As a member of the Cellular Therapy Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), I create new types of cancer treatments that use the body’s own immune system—like specially modified T cells—to help patients whose cancer doesn’t improve with standard treatments.
I care for people with advanced cancers who are candidates for clinical trials involving engineered immune cells. These trials are often therapies developed right here at MSK. My goal is to offer my patients not only access to cutting-edge therapies, but also the information and guidance needed to make confident, informed decisions about their care. Many of my patients are referred to me because they have limited standard treatment options, and I work closely with them to ensure they understand the science and strategy behind each approach.
In my research, I focus on discovering and developing new classes of personalized cell therapies. Several of our group’s discoveries are currently being evaluated in early phase clinical trials, a bench-to-bedside path that I hope to replicate for many targets in the future. I also study why some cancers resist immune-based treatments—like when they stop showing signals (such as HLA) that help the immune system recognize them—and how we can design better cell therapies to beat that resistance.
I was drawn to oncology through both personal experience and scientific curiosity. Cancer is a disease that tests the boundaries of medicine, and I believe the future of cancer care lies in translating innovation into real-world options for patients. When I’m not in the clinic or lab, I’m often out in nature. I’ve guided mountaineering expeditions in the Bolivian Andes and Rockies, once swam the English Channel, and enjoy running the NYC Marathon annually as a part of MSK’s Fred’s Team. I aim to bring that same determination and focus when caring for all of my patients.
A cellular therapy specialist is a doctor with special training in using cell therapies to treat health conditions such as cancer. Therapies can include chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy.
