Mrinal Gounder, MD
Mrinal Gounder is an internationally recognized medical oncologist who holds dual appointments in sarcoma and early drug development (phase 1) programs at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). Dr. Gounder specializes in developing new cancer therapies, with a specific focus on sarcoma, a rare cancer that affects children, adolescents, and adults. He joined MSK in 2008 and has a special interest in personalized medicine, a field that uses genetic testing to guide therapy selection, based on an individual patient’s genetic profile.
Dr. Gounder is the principal investigator of several global clinical trials (phase 1 to phase 3) evaluating promising new drugs for sarcoma, among other solid cancers. He was the global lead for the study that led to FDA approval of tazemetostat in sarcoma. In 2018, the American Society of Clinical Oncology recognized Dr. Gounder’s drug development efforts in the setting of rare cancers as one of the Top 10 Advances of the Year in the field of oncology. His original research has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology, Nature Medicine, and other medical oncology journals.
He is also MSK’s Physician Ambassador to India and Asia and represents MSK in leadership, research, and educational activities involving India and Asia. In this role, Dr. Gounder — who is fluent in Tamil and Hindi — also works closely with leadership at the Bobst International Center to bring MSK-quality care to these specific areas. He is passionate not only about providing the best treatment options to our international community but also about establishing partnerships to improve access to patient care while fostering global collaborations in education and graduate medical training to advance cancer research and clinical trials.
