Elective Course Description
This primarily outpatient elective is offered to fourth year medical students with a strong interest in pediatric neuro-oncology. This elective offers an opportunity for students to gain experience in the evaluation and management of patients with primary pediatric central nervous system tumors. Students will work under the direct supervision of a pediatric neuro-oncology attending and participate in pediatric neuro-oncology clinical conferences including tumor board. The student will also gain experience in neuroradiology, neuropathology and molecular genetics of pediatric brain tumors. Medical Students will be evaluated by the Neuro-Oncology Service teaching faculty based on their performance throughout their elective.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about clinical manifestation of pediatric central nervous system tumors and neuroradiologic correlates.
- Learn about the multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients with pediatric central nervous system tumors.
- Learn about the principles of central nervous tumor pathology and classification.
- Learn basic principles of neurosurgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, molecular targeted therapy and associated complications.
