When your child comes to MSK Kids, our experts in hematology (the study of blood) will perform a complete medical work-up that may include:

• a physical exam to look for certain outward signs of blood disorders
• blood tests, the most common way hematologists diagnose blood disorders
• genetic tests for certain mutations linked to specific blood disorders. For these, we work with experts from our pediatric and adult clinical genetics teams.
• bone marrow testing

We perform all hematologic tests with your child’s comfort and well-being in mind. Your child’s doctors will explain what you can expect during this process. We use these tests to help develop a treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique needs.
