Transitioning to EBP

At any institution, transitioning to EBP requires a significant investment of time and other resources. It’s complicated to learn and fully implement the methodology. Many organizations struggle with building and sustaining an EBP-focused culture, even if they have studied the theory in academic settings.

This is where MSK EBP Consulting—and MSK’s SEEK™ Evidence-based Practice methodology—can make all the difference.

We’ve been through this process ourselves, and we understand what it takes to make EBP theory a reality within a healthcare organization. After successfully expanding our commitment to EBP across new teams and projects over several years, we know how to get people excited about this amazing technique and, most importantly, to keep them energized and committed over time.

We have used the past five years to develop an EBP curriculum that is comprehensive, yet feasible for bedside clinicians to participate in. Our content, format and schedule are designed to help organizations transition the learnings of EBP, as taught in the classroom, to the real world, where they can operationalize the method into practice. Our goal is to train the trainers in your institution to adopt and deploy this curriculum and continue to spread the success of EBP at your own organization.

MSK’s SEEK™ method—designed to help institutions implement and enculturate EBP into their work lives—achieves results. Our consultants are well-prepared to help organizations develop and sustain their own EBP-focused cultures, while also measuring their return on this investment over time. This is our focus and expertise—and it’s our commitment to the healthcare organizations who work with our team. We will help you make EBP a reality at your institution.

MSK and EBP—a Winning Combination

The Nursing Department at MSK embarked on its EBP journey in 2015, when we started attending EBP immersions and training sessions at an academic-research institution. We launched our own EBP program in Spring 2021 with some introductory courses and an initial cohort of nurses who were based in a variety of units throughout our institution.

Since then, we have expanded our commitment to the EBP methodology by developing a more extensive curriculum, including several specialized workshops. We provide training to two cohort groups each year, with 10-12 participants who now include both nurses and other clinical professionals. This method has proven very effective for our institution and keeps growing.

Today, with more than 50 experienced mentors in place here at MSK, we are proud to note that seven cohorts have completed our training. More than 60 EBP-focused projects are in various stages of development and implementation here at MSK. Significantly, some of these initiatives have led to policy and practice changes, while others have enabled us to validate current clinical practices. We have documented our experiences with EBP in a peer-reviewed here.

MSK has honed and perfected a proprietary EBP model, built upon the operational structure, processes, and multi-faceted training curriculum that we have validated during years of working with EBP. The MSK model, known as SEEK™ (Spirit of Inquiry, Expanding EBP Knowledge), has been clinically demonstrated to foster success, and it is feasible for frontline clinical staff at healthcare institutions around the world to adopt.

Guiding Healthcare Institutions Along the EBP Journey

With training and practice rooted in MSK’s proprietary SEEK™ method, our team will teach your nurses and interprofessional teams how to generate—and continuously act upon and keep developing—new knowledge, innovation, and improvement at your institution.

We understand that EBP isn’t just a theoretical construct. It’s a valuable tool that can and should be utilized in everyday practice. Educating and empowering clinicians to embrace and utilize EBP is a worthy endeavor, one that is in alignment with the Magnet® principles that define nursing excellence and exceptional healthcare for patients.

MSK EBP Consulting works with healthcare organizations who may be at different stages of the EBP journey:

  • We offer introductory courses and guidance for first-time users. In some cases, these institutions may not yet fully appreciate the value that EBP can bring to an organization. We can help them explore that potential.
  • We offer intermediate-level and specialized training for other clinical organizations, who may be further along on the EBP journey after having received some initial training elsewhere. These institutions may recognize the potential importance and value of EBP, but they require more training and guidance to translate the theory into a fully operationalized EBP model within their clinical organization.
