Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Malcolm A. S. Moore
It is with a heavy heart that we mark the passing of Dr. Malcolm A. S. Moore, DPhil, on September 23, 2025. Dr. Moore was a pioneering biologist whose discoveries profoundly shaped modern cell biology, immunology, and cancer research. As the founding Enid A. Haupt Chair of Cell Biology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, his groundbreaking studies on hematopoietic and stem cell biology paved the way for transformative advances in medicine. His research deepened our understanding of how immune and blood systems develop and regenerate, leading to innovative therapeutic approaches in cancer and immune disorders. Among his many achievements, Dr. Moore’s work contributed to the development of filgrastim—a life-saving therapy that stimulates white blood cell production and supports patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Dr. Moore’s exceptional contributions were recognized through numerous honors, including the William B. Coley Award for Basic and Tumor Immunology, the Hope Funds Award of Excellence in Basic Research, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cancer Research & Treatment Fund, and the C. Chester Stock Award Lectureship. In recognition of his discovery of G-CSF, that insight was named a “Major Cancer Milestone” by ASCO .
His vision and leadership established a lasting foundation of scientific excellence that continues to guide the Cell Biology Program today, inspiring generations of scientists to pursue discovery, mentorship, and innovation in the advancement of human health.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Moore’s family, including his wife Francine, as well as his friends and colleagues.
