Dr. Georgios Karagkounis uses minimally invasive surgery to treat colorectal cancers at MSK, including colon, rectal, anal, appendix, and metastatic cancers.
A diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer can feel overwhelming—especially when rare or aggressive tumors spread. These complex cancers require a treatment approach that is coupled with thoughtful, expert, and compassionate care.
Hi, I’m Dr. Georgios Karagkounis, a surgical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering, specializing in the treatment of GI cancers that include the colon, rectum, and appendix. I treat early-stage disease, as well as rare and metastatic GI cancers—where tumors have spread to other organs or tissues within the abdomen. My research involves focusing on understanding how and why these tumors spread within the abdominal cavity.
At MSK, we’re continually advancing medicine and translating those discoveries into targeted treatment options that treat and reverse the spread of disease. As a result, new clinical trials are changing the landscape of GI cancer care, and I am always happy to provide guidance on the best trials currently available to my patients.
You bring your whole life to your diagnosis, and my team and I will never lose sight of the fact that, while we are treating your cancer, we are also prioritizing the fullness of who you are.
Building our relationship upon trust, transparent communication, and collaborative decision-making, our whole team will guide you in creating treatment options that align with your personal values.
Our goal is always the same: to keep you as healthy as possible, for as long as possible, while honoring what matters most to you. I’m privileged to be entrusted with your care.
