For me, medicine has always been the perfect blend of science and service. I’ve always been naturally curious—especially about the human body and disease—but what really drew me in was the chance to help people in a tangible, meaningful way.
Hi, I’m Dr. Maria Widmar, a colorectal surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering. I specialize in the treatment of colon and rectal cancers, as well as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other forms of inflammatory bowel disease.
Colorectal surgery is a field where we can truly change lives. Many of these cancers are highly treatable—and when you combine that with the level of expertise we have here at MSK, the outcomes can be incredibly hopeful. Our team specializes in minimally invasive robotic surgery, and nonoperative management of rectal cancers, which means we can treat even complex conditions with precision and care—helping patients recover faster and get back to living their lives.
When someone hears the word “cancer,” it can feel isolating and overwhelming. My job—and my privilege—is to help lift the burden from your shoulders. From day one, you’re not facing this alone. You’re walking in to meet a team that knows cancer inside and out. Our goal is to coordinate every step of your care, so you can focus on healing, not logistics. We will build a path forward, together.
